Randal Ray Perkins: A Life of Resilience, Family, and Philanthropy

Randal Ray Perkins, affectionately known as “Randy”, tragically passed away unexpectedly on December 28. Perkins, at the age of 60, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and an influential businessman. His sudden departure leaves behind a legacy as a spirited competitor in the business world, a father who cherished his four daughters, and a man known for his boundless generosity.

Randy Perkins: A Man of Resilience and Hard Work

Born on October 6, 1964, in Miami, Perkins was a man characterized by his strong work ethic and relentless drive for success. He kicked off his education journey at Miami Coral Park Senior High School and later attended the University of Miami where he was a walk-on to the football team. His academic journey saw him transfer to the University of Central Florida where his story took an interesting turn.

Perkins, demonstrating his sense of responsibility, took the decision to leave college early to support his young family. He began working in jobs with Yellow Freight and Ryder and later ventured into the landscaping business. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Grasshopper Landscaping, an endeavor that would later evolve into Sunbelt and ultimately, the rapid-response disaster company, AshBritt.

AshBritt: A Beacon in Disaster Recovery

The turning point in his life occurred following Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Grasshopper Landscaping, then a subcontractor, introduced Perkins and his wife and business partner, Saily, to the disaster response field. Over the next 32 years, the Perkins family transformed AshBritt into the nation’s leading disaster recovery and emergency management company, setting an industry standard and achieving tremendous success. Perkins is credited with shaping the industry through his innovative approaches, relentless drive, and commitment to excellence.

Perkins was a hands-on leader in his field, often living in impacted communities for months to oversee recovery. He managed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers missions after major disasters including Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Helene, Superstorm Sandy and the Kentucky flood cleanup. His commitment to service left an enduring impact on communities nationwide.

Philanthropy: A Passion for Supporting Others

Beyond his business achievements, Perkins’ true passion lay in supporting others. Through the AshBritt Foundation and his personal giving, he became a recognized philanthropist. His efforts included launching the Perkins Initiative for Disaster Response and Global Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and supporting organizations such as Best Buddies, the Brett Boyer Foundation, and the Lauren’s Kids Foundation.

Perkins’ generosity was deeply personal, as reflected by his nearly $1 million contribution to rebuild the Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. The renovated facility now stands as a beacon of hope and healing, bearing the name “The AshBritt Environmental & Lauren’s Kids Trauma Therapy House.”

In 2016, Perkins sought to extend his influence by running as the Democratic nominee for Florida’s 18th Congressional District. Although unsuccessful, his commitment to public service remained undeterred.

Survived by his wife Saily, their four daughters, grandchildren, parents and four sisters, Perkins leaves behind a legacy of resilience, competition, family, and hard work. His life was a testament to the fact that the world is undeniably better because he was in it. Those wishing to support his legacy can contribute to the AshBritt Foundation.
