The Miami-Dade GOP is on the precipice of significant change. With Hialeah Rep. Alex Rizo stepping down as Chair of the party, a new leader is set to be elected. This shift in leadership comes at a crucial time, following the party’s recent successes in the county’s key elections. While Rizo’s decision to not seek another term may come as a surprise to some, he explains it’s a move calculated to better balance his responsibilities.
Alex Rizo Steps Down
Rizo, who’s served as the Chair of the Miami-Dade Republican Executive Committee (REC) since 2022, announced that the committee would elect a new Chair. This decision comes after Rizo’s realization that his duties as a third-term House member would demand more of his time over the next two years. Balancing his legislative responsibilities with being Chair would be challenging, he admitted. Rizo communicated his decision to not compete for the Chair post at the REC’s Monday night meeting, signaling the end of his term.
Who Will Succeed Rizo?
As Rizo steps down, the question of who will succeed him comes into the spotlight. Two notable candidates have emerged: Kevin Cooper, the REC’s current Vice Chair, and Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Jerry Joseph. Alongside the Chair, the REC members will also elect other Governing Board members, including Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.
The GOP’s Success Under Rizo’s Leadership
Rizo’s departure from REC party leadership follows a period of significant GOP victories in Florida’s most populous county. Under his leadership, Miami-Dade voters sided with the GOP presidential nominee for the first time this century. Furthermore, the county elected all Republican candidates for its five constitutional offices, including Sheriff and Supervisor of Elections.
Despite stepping down as Chair, Rizo has expressed his intentions to stay involved with the party. He plans to help build on the impressive results achieved under his leadership.
“I still intend to be part of the party and will ask to be appointed to the Executive Committee of the Republican party of Florida,” he confirmed. “So, I’ll still very much be involved in all that. We accomplished a lot this November. The results speak for themselves.”
As the Miami-Dade GOP embarks on this new chapter, there’s a lot at stake. The new Chair will have big shoes to fill, and the party’s momentum in the county will hinge on their leadership. Regardless, with Rizo still involved, it’s clear that the party’s future remains bright.
