Lawyers Seek Exit from Giuliani’s Defamation Judgment Case

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and personal attorney for President Donald Trump, is caught in a legal maelstrom. This time, it isn’t about election fraud allegations or criminal charges, but a $148 million defamation judgment and a fight over his assets. Two lawyers who were representing Giuliani in this legal battle have now asked to be removed from the case, citing disagreements with their client. This shocking development adds a new layer to an already complex case.

Giuliani’s Defamation Case and Bankruptcy Filing

Giuliani has been ordered to surrender personal property, including a Mercedes once owned by actress Lauren Bacall, an heirloom watch, and other valuable assets. These are sought as part of the fulfillment of a $148 million defamation judgment against him. This judgment was awarded last year to two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. The duo had sued Giuliani for his comments about them as he sought to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss.

However, Giuliani has allegedly avoided turning over his assets. Following the judgment, he filed for bankruptcy, but a judge cut short this process, finding that the former mayor had flouted the process.

Lawyers Request to Withdraw Representation

On Wednesday, attorneys Kenneth Caruso and David Labkowski filed a request in federal court to stop representing Giuliani. They cited “fundamental disagreement” as the reason for their withdrawal. Caruso, in the filing, explained that a lawyer may withdraw from representing a client under certain conditions, including when there is a fundamental disagreement, the client insists on presenting a claim not warranted by law, or the client fails to cooperate.

Though several parts of the publicly posted filing are blacked out, leaving the specific issues undisclosed, it is evident that there are significant disagreements between Giuliani and his lawyers. Giuliani, however, has until Monday to oppose this motion.

Giuliani’s Defiance Amid Legal Challenges

The defamation judgment and the subsequent legal challenges are rooted in Giuliani’s role in pushing Trump’s unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen. This effort has also resulted in pending criminal charges against Giuliani in Georgia and Arizona. Giuliani has remained defiant amid these challenges, claiming that he is the victim of a “political vendetta.”

Interestingly, Giuliani, who has since been disbarred in New York and Washington, was spotted on Election Day, near a polling place in Palm Beach, Florida, in a Mercedes that appeared to be the car he was supposed to surrender.

In conclusion, Giuliani’s legal woes continue to mount, with his own lawyers now seeking to withdraw their representation. The outcome of these developments could have significant implications for the former mayor’s legal and financial future. As the drama unfolds, all eyes are on Giuliani, who continues to be a key player in the political and legal landscape.
